“Over the Hedge” is funny. Pure summer fun, the kind of movie a car full of seventh grade boys see with a car full of seventh grade girls. While it was only released in May, it has all the makings of a summer movie, like the old Peanuts movies. Nothing here is too complicated to understand, most of it is pretty silly, and all of it is safe for the entire family.

When movies are made, they intend an audience, and an audience reaction. Here, the bar was not set to be compared to the sentimental depth of “Finding Nemo,” or the abject, hyperactive hilarity of “Aladdin.” Here, “Over the Hedge” has a basic plot, and a basic conflict, and does the job it sets out to do.

RJ the Raccoon owes a very angry bear a wagon load of snacks, and realizes the new human suburb is packed with these snacks. He meets up with a friendly, but not too smart neighborhood of small forest animals, led by a careful-thinking turtle named Vern.

The characters are strong, each is distinguished from the other, with distinctive personalities, unlike the overblown homogeny found in some cartoons. This matters especially here, as there are more animals than some younger children will be familiar with.

Can RJ persuade the animals to help him steal the snacks from the humans? Will Vern remain the sensible leader, and help them avoid the ‘Verminator’ and his viscous animal killing tools?

For me, the funniest scene is an almost Matrix-like action sequence when the ordinarily hyper Hammy drinks a caffeine drink and goes in on a mission. Time stops, but not for Hammy.

The animation is good enough, and the story is told straight-ahead, without catchy songs. No one will leave the theater thinking, “That’s incredible production value!” They will leave laughing, with an original story.

The structure of the movie is the reverse of Man vs his environment. As the humans take over former forest, there are fewer places for the animals to find food. Naturally, the animals smell potato chips and want more. Naturally, also, the humans want to retain a hedge between the woods and their home.

Messages about Man encroaching on his environment are throughout, but these do not overtake the movie. It might leave a few suburban moms and dads feeling a little sheepish, but everyone will laugh too much to really have a guilt trip.

I fully recommend “Over the Hedge.”

A very funny and well executed new animated feature. The story is well written and the voices are well cast. The script is full of fun poking at current day society. When asked how many people normally travel in a SUV, Bruce Willis replies one. There are swipes at video games and high end consumer goods. The most fun is poked at food and the eating habits of the average American. The kids should like the animals and the grown ups should like the humor. There is something here for everybody. This is fun, try it.

There are some key elements to identifying a poorly made film be it television or large screen: Over use of very close up shots, jerky camera activity, silly post production effects, third rate actors, amature CGI, childish script, obvious amature production quality (lighting, fake rain machines, etc), poor acting, action sequences that bore the viewer, incorherent story lines, rediculous computer input sceens with people typing 300 words per minute while talking. There are more I am sure. Most movies contain some of these elements but in general large screen movies contain fewer then small screen do just as a function of budget differences. I tend to give small screen productions a little slack due to these budget challenges.

That said, The Storm is a rare production. It embraces, with reckless abandon, all of the elements of a substandard movie. Bordering on parody, The Storm is almost unwatchable. Treat Williams, the poor man’s Harrison Ford, leads a pedestrian cast of hacks sleep walking through this long, very long, two hour (with ads) movie. Needless to say you sould skip this one. If you do rent or, dare I say, buy this POS, I can promise you will want to keep the remote handy for fast forwarding whole segments.

I watched this when it was on NBC and it was pretty bad. With the exception of Treat Williams and David James Elliott, I was wondering who those others were advertised as stars. Being I’m not a teenager is probably why I didn’t know them. The split screen scenes are over done. There are not just 2 scenes at one time but 3 or 4. Add to that the advertisements for NBC’s fall shows along the bottom and it was a confusing mess to watch. I know those ads will not be on the DVD. Van Der Beek is stone faced thoughout the movie and in my personal opinion a terrible actor. I am not sure who Teri Polo was but a friend told me they thought she was the news woman killed in the first hour in a cheap rip off of the shower scene in Psycho. Treat Williams is good in the movie but he does ham it up at times. If you like this type of movie you might like this one. I must confess that I only watched it as I am a JAG fan and watched to see David James Elliott who had a small role as the Army General. NBC heavily advertised that he was in the movie so it was disappointing to see his role so small. If you are a fan of his just watch the trailer and you will see about half of his scenes. The plot has been done before in other movies made for TV. This one is overall not very original.

From the elegant opening song crooned by Vic Damone to the tearful last scene, this movie will have you alternately crying, laughing, and crying again. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr are perfection as the two people who meet on a ship and plunge in appreciate. Because they are each engaged to other people, they choose to build their feelings to the test of time. They agree to meet atop the Empire Plot Building in six months if they feel the same. One shows up, one doesn’t because of tragic circumstances. When they accidentally meet months later at a ballet, it is awkward, yet the chemistry cannot be denied. A sentimental painting, an art dealer’s tale of a lady in a wheelchair, and Cary Grant’s dramatic opening of a door lead to an ending that requires a rotund box of tissues but is one of Hollywood’s most memorable scenes. In addition, this movie is enhanced by a delighful choir of orphans, a grandmother with an idyllic villa, and Richard Denning in a marvelous supporting role. Traditionally a movie to notice with the one you care for on Valentine’s Day, this movie is proper alone, as a duo, or in a gargantuan group. Not fair a chick flick, but a movie for everyone who has ever loved or dreamed of being in fancy.

They say that no Man on earth could completely “Net” this movie.

We don’t have actors like Cary Grant now adays to stick up for us Trusty men who can comprehend such a deep rich esteem theme.

And what a shame too….the days of suave gentlemen are gone and replaced by the Brad Pitts…..in reality….I hold women want to study more men become fair and romantic gentlemen.

Well “An Affair to Remember” is one of those classics that belong to the tragic adore affair file….but with a delighted ending.

Cary and Deberah Kerr are a perfect combination for this.

Like Charles Boyer and Irene Dunn before them, Grant and Kerr salvage even more depth with general facial expressions and gestures, that remind me of Capra-esque qualities in their characters.
The scene where Grant is revisiting the home of his Grandmother who had unbiased passed away…returning to the scene in his mind where Esteem was current and the sounds he hears of the afternoon when he had worthy to peruse foward to…..it’s heartbreaking to want to touch something that once housed his affection…..we realise then that Grants care for for Kerr is as right to us also.

One mark…one perfect reason why this movie appeals to me and why I am writing this review in hopes that more people will better understand this movie….
The Demolish scene….To almost slide away from Correct care for, and taste the sadness and dissapointment, to kiss her hand and to say goodbye forever….and within moments….within its painful honesty ….realize that fair esteem does in fact prevail over obsticals is an overwhelming revelation.
